And Data as the main character of this story …

Tech Woman

Who run the Tech world… Girls?

As a woman working in a tech environment, I have always felt that fewer ladies than men were working as developers, administrators or IT managers including tech leaders positions.

Every year, Stackoverflow performs a worldwide survey, covering all kind of information such as most used programming languages and frameworks, favourite operating systems, platforms for sharing code and more details.

In my way to become a Data-Driven woman I decided it was the right moment to confirm if those feelings of mine were right or wrong…

Are you ready? Let’s go to the point!

Question 1: What about the Gender gap in this survey? Do women answer this survey the same than men?

After downloading the raw data, loading them on a Python Notebook and preparing them with care to make they speak loud and clear, you can answer yourself this first question, just looking this nice graph generated with plotly.

Right now, women do not run the StackOverflow Survey world…

Question 2: Data Science and Machine Learning jobs are very atractive these days so where are these specialists located?

To save you from hard work, I have performed some tasks to present you the answer to this question in a concise and graphical way…

The higher amount of these demanded specialists is in the United States of America and also in India. There is also a nice amount of them all over Europe.

If you are curious… I also prepared the number of Data Scientist and Machine Learning women all over the world who answered this survey…

American women run the Data Scientist world, followed by the english gentlewomen.

Question 4: What is the best tool for code sharing?

When you work within a team, you need to share the code you develop with your colleagues, so what is the favourite tool to share code?

Again, let’s answer with a colourful graphic

Top 5 Collaboration Tools by country

Github is the favourite platform to share code. And is there any special trend between women? Yes, there is a slightly different preference for code sharing platforms at the last positions…

So, to recap:

We took a look at the 2020 StackOverflow survey and discovered the following insights:

  1. Men answered this survey more than women.
  2. Data Scientist and Machine Learning specialists come mainly from USA and India. Women of this kind of speciality come from English-speaking countries such as USA and United Kingdom.
  3. The favourite programming language is JavaScript followed by HTML/CSS and between ladies it is the same but in reverse order.
  4. The most used tool to share code is Github.

There is another question: How well can we predict an individual’s job salary in this tech world? But I’m not going to answer yet… if you are interested, you’ll have to visit my Github repository (do you remember? the favourite tool for sharing code), learn some Python (one of the favourite programming languages) and see what Data Science techniques this woman applied to predict tech salaries, you dare? to run the tech world?
